Fire at the Topaz Lodge
A hotel on the Nevada-California line owned by the Reno mayor and his son in southern Douglas County will be closed for an unknown length of time after a fire.
Fire broke out Tuesday night in the the attic area of the Topaz Lodge and Casino and has been attributed to an electrical short circuit. Several fire departments responded and had the fire under control about one hour after it was first reported. No one was injured.
Rob Cashell says there is a lot of cleanup and mopup to do, and there is a lot of smoke and water damage. Most fire damage was contained to the attic and the business offices in the new portion of the upstairs of the lodge above the casino floor.
The lodge has a staff of about 150 employees. During the cleanup, the general store, gas station and lodging accommodations will remain open with a special rate of $35 a night in the lodge while the casino and restaurants remain closed.
